UTM - Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement

Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM)

Inspekt performs Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) to assess remaining material thickness and detect material loss caused by, among other things, corrosion and erosion.

UTM is an important part of ship Class Renewal and is used to document the remaining thickness of the hull and other structural components prior to the class assessment.

Our staff is not only technically qualified for UTM, but also has extensive experience in ship structures, hulls, and other marine structures. We have a good understanding of the class's technical requirements and can tailor the inspection according to, among other things, the vessel's type, age, design, and current class requirements.

Ultrasonic thickness measurement is a non-destructive testing method used to determine the remaining thickness of metallic components.

The inspection may include:

  • Measurement of remaining wall thickness

  • Mapping of corrosion and material loss

  • Inspection of pipes, tanks, and pressure-bearing components

  • Measurement of local and critical areas

  • Documentation of measurement results and identified deviations

  • Close-up inspection of relevant areas

The results provide the client and the classification society with documented evidence to assess the current condition of the structure and the need for any measures.

Classification and IACS

Inspekt has experience with UTM inspections for class-related projects and is certified by 5 classification societies within IACSLloyd’s Register (LR), DNV, Bureau Veritas (BV), RINA and ABS.

IACS, International Association of Classification Societies, is an international association of classification societies that develops common technical rules and standards for, among other things, the design, construction, and maintenance of ships and other marine structures.

Inspekt combines certified UTM expertise, advanced measurement equipment, and practical experience with steel structures to deliver reliable and cost-effective UTM inspections.

UTM vid Class Renewal

UTM is an essential part of the class renewal for vessels.

During class renewal, comprehensive information regarding the remaining thickness of the hull and structural components is required. Inspekt performs UTM in accordance with the requirements applicable to the specific vessel and its class.

We take the ship's type, age, construction and current class requirements when the scope of the inspection is planned.

This provides an efficient and structured basis for the continued class action process.

More than just thickness measurement

Reliable UTM inspection requires more than the right measuring equipment.

Inspekt combines technical UTM expertise with practical experience in ships and steel structures. Our inspectors are accustomed to navigating complex structures, identifying relevant measurement areas, and understanding how the results relate to the function of the structure and class requirements.

If necessary, UTM can be combined with other inspection activities to provide a more complete picture of the structure's condition.

Applications

Inspekt performs UTM on, among other things:

  • Ship
  • Marine structures
  • Platforms and offshore installations
  • Cranes and lifting structures
  • Pipelines
  • Tanks and tank structures
  • Pressure vessel
  • Pannor
  • Silos
  • Other steel structures exposed to corrosion or erosion
